N-Dimension: Liberation of the Brain - Statement
”N-Dimension: Liberation of the Brain” is an installation work by Masao Murabayashi that expands the two-dimensional medium of photography into multiple dimensions, presenting viewers with an unprecedented visual world.
Typically, photographs maintain uniform focus across a flat plane, reproducing three-dimensional reality as a two-dimensional image. In this work, however, the application of photographic “tilt” techniques limits focus to specific areas, creating depth and distortion that diverge from reality. As a result, the landscape emerges not as mere reproduction, but as a space undergoing multidimensional transformation.
This visual structure unsettles the worldview that the human brain has perceived as three-dimensional, expanding the very nature of perception itself. The “N-Dimension” in the title symbolizes infinite dimensional possibilities beyond existing spatial understanding. Through the experience of “liberating the brain,” viewers encounter a new sense of reality.
Contemporary art is the endeavor of renewing conventional expressions and frameworks to present sensations and ideas yet unseen. While employing the classical medium of photography, this work transcends its limitations, achieving an expansion from flat surface to space, and further to multiple dimensions. Through this new expression, I have created “landscapes never before seen” and demonstrated new possibilities for contemporary art.
